Last week we held our annual Careers Fair for Year 10 and 11 students and their parents/carers.

Our exhibitors this year included local businesses including those from the engineering, sports training and aerospace sectors. Alongside business, The University of Winchester offered advice to students looking ahead at their post-18 pathways. The military services were also represented at the fair and students were surprised at the variety of training that was provided by the Army, Navy and RAF.

We are very fortunate to have excellent colleges in the local area providing a successful pathway for almost all out students. At the fair, eight local colleges were present where students could discuss their post-16 options as they looked at the next step once they finish Robert May's.

There was a great atmosphere throughout the event with Year 11 arriving for the first half and Year 10 visiting in the second half of the Fair. The exhibitors spoke enthusiastically about how busy it was and the intelligent questions students asked. Students picked up prospectuses and brochures – along with pens, pencils and sweets – to browse through at home. Thank you to parents and carers for spending time with your children to assist them with their careers.

This week sees the opening of many college applications for next year. At school they have been guided through writing their CVs and personal statements and there have been assemblies from local colleges and alternatives such as apprenticeships. We have included this for parents to view as many students found the contents eye opening.

An introduction to Apprenticeships - Assembly Presentation

Applications for colleges open in October and most have their deadlines between November and Christmas. Details are included in this letter. Colleges who accept in different phases give priority to those students that apply early but keep applications open after the deadline so is it useful to get applications in for Phase 1.

Please do encourage students to visit the college Open Days and keep an eye on application deadlines. Both of these and more information will be on the college websites.

All links to colleges, along with lots more Post-16 information can be found on the RMS Careers website which can be found via our careers page
