Library
“Pupil librarians help maintain a well-equipped library where pupils huddle together to read or complete homework.” (Ofsted Report 2022)
The Library is a calm and welcoming space for students where reading for pleasure is championed and encouraged. The library is staffed by a full-time librarian, supported by student librarians, and is open for reading and studying from 8.00am to 4.00pm daily with the exception of Fridays when the library is open until 3.30pm. Students may borrow up to three books for two weeks to enjoy and read at home and all KS3 students should have something enjoyable to read in their bags at all times.
There are thousands of fiction books to read as well as non-fiction books and revision materials to support your studies. There are special collections for Careers and Mental Health and Wellbeing (Shelf Help). The Library also has online resources including ebooks, audiobooks and films. There are opportunities to get involved by joining our Book Group, participating in events and activities or becoming a Student Librarian.
All Year 7 students have a fortnightly reading lesson during English where they can swap their books and read to improve their reading skills.
Keep reading, it will help you with your academic performance in all subjects and support your wellbeing by elevating your mood and reducing stress!

Year 6 Summer Reading Challenge: Book Club
We know that reading for pleasure is a key to success in secondary school. It helps pupils progress in all of their subjects and it also supports their wellbeing. To help the new Year 7s get off to a good start, we are taking part in a Summer Book Club run by the charity, Book Clubs in Schools.
All new Year 7s will be reading Relic Hamilton – Genie Hunter by Joseph Coelho. As they read they will answer questions and complete activities relating to the book in the Activity Pack.
Please can you encourage and support your child to read the book and complete the activities. Do talk to your child about the book and, if possible, read it along with them. The activities are designed to be fun and involve some writing, drawing and outside activities - there is no need to complete everything, but try to do at least one activity that your child can share with Miss Bennett (our Librarian) in September or by email to library@rmays.com
In September, we will talk about the book and look forward to seeing some of the results of their creative activities. There will be house points, certificates and prizes for everyone that completes the activities and a chance to attend an online Q&A with the Author.
