On Wednesday this week we held our annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Day with the whole of Year 9.

The sessions were provided by some local businesses and colleges who came into Robert May’s School to run a variety of engaging, practical STEM activities. The sessions used small group activities to allow students to try some new STEM activities.

These included:

  • Building paper bridges to test structure strength
  • Firing rockets to test distance
  • Building catapults to fire small balls at a target
  • Building a rollercoaster to see how long a ball could roll for
  • Setting up a battery from an orange and checking voltage
  • Building wax bridges with support built into the wax to test improved forces

The students were amazing. Every one of them engaged with the sessions. We are very grateful to our local providers who gave up their time to come and entertain and teach our students.

If you work for a STEM company and would like to be involved in the STEM Day or other activities we provide, please contact me via email (aidan.peake@rmays.com).
