Commemorating Our Founder: Robert May's School Celebrates Its Enduring Legacy

Odiham, Thursday 3rd July 2025 – Robert May's School came together yesterday for its annual Founder's Day celebration, a poignant event that connected the past, present, and future of the school. RMS Trustees and Members, alongside Year 7 students and staff, were joined by students and staff from Mayhill Primary School to commemorate the profound generosity of Robert May, whose act in 1694 laid the foundation for the school we know today.

The day served as a powerful reminder of Robert May's enduring legacy and the importance of community. A significant part of the commemoration involved the laying of wreaths to honour two French Prisoners of War from the Napoleonic Wars who lived and sadly died in Odiham: Pierre Feron (died May 8, 1810) and Pierre Julien Junot (died September 4, 1809). These men, though prisoners, were embraced by the hospitable and generous people of Odiham, a testament to the strong community spirit that continues to define the area. This act of remembrance underscored the importance of unity and compassion within our own community.

Beyond the wreath-laying ceremony, attendees enjoyed a heartfelt Church service led by Youth Pastors Helen Chatfield and Paul Dadd. The service was enriched by musical performances from the talented RMS Singers and various solo musicians, showcasing the school's vibrant performing arts talent. Year 7 students also delivered reflective speeches, sharing insights into their journey since joining RMS and their hopes for the future.

Overall, it was a truly wonderful day, celebrating the foundations of Robert May's School and the community values it upholds. It was a day to remember our history and look forward to a future that, we hope, will see this tradition continue for another 300 years.
