Winners of the Year 11 House Computer Science and Environmental Issues project announced...

To finish 2023, Year 11 students were set a digital Prep/Homework Competition Project, to analyse the social, environmental, ethical and environmental impacts of Computer Science. Students were encouraged to use programming to create quizzes on the topics, refer to academic articles, as well as use their ethical debates and classroom learning such as digital submissions to the international Earthshot Prize. These topics are integral to Component 1.6 of GCSE Computer Science, and often the topic of the only essay style question within their final GCSE Paper 1 Exam. Students submitted their entries digitally, using the MS Teams Assignment.

The students produced several entries including google websites, special mention to Zainab Ahmed for her website submission! Well presented reports and thoughtful evaluative opinions to demonstrate their ideas. Several students produced a python quiz, such as Joshua Aeschlimann and Zafrul Huda - well done.

However, the winners are....

1st - Naimh Farrell

Naimh submitted her entry with several localised and relevant community issues. Keeping this in mind, her analysis includes her opinion involving several article references such as the social impacts of technology, the digital divide and climate change. Finally she ends with her thoughtful opinion- which she titles Are the Advantages Worth the Disadvantages?

2nd - Tomas Vihena

Tom (known as Tom V. in the Computing Classroom due to his Computing Expertise) included a well designed Python function with use of the iteration construct. He used the function to create a Environmental Impacts quiz. Very creative!

3rd Joint- Yousif Saheb

Yousif's submitted a very thorough assignment, covering all aspects of the project with an variety of tools to demonstrate his point such as videos, graphs and diagrams. I especially appreciate his efforts to create a Python quiz using the Selection construct.

3rd Joint - Matthew Trefusis

Matthew's assignment included a variety of local sources, with clear explanations and evaluation, I especially liked his use of differing points of view.

...Well done! Winners received lots of house points and vouchers
